Founded in 1937 and spanning more than 180 international destinations, Air Canada is the country's largest airline and contains the eighth-largest fleet in the world. Initially named Trans-Canada Airlines, the group began their operations with a five-million-dollar government grant in which they purchased their modest fleet of a Boeing Stearman and two Lockheed Model 18 Lodestars. By 1939, Trans-Canada's fleet had grown to include six Lockheed Model 18 Lodestars and 12 Lockheed Model 14 Super Electras, and by the end of the decade, the airline had recruited more than 500 employees.
By 1964, the airline had been rebranded as Air Canada. It was recognised as the nation's airline and hosted Queen Elizabeth 11 as a passenger when returning from her tour of Canada with Prince Phillip. By 1988, the airline was privatised and had acquired an impressive fleet of aircraft, including Lockheed Tristar jetliners, Boeing 727 and Boeing 747.
Over the decades the airline has adopted some ground-breaking policies and initiatives. In 1978, Air Canada was the first Canadian major carrier to employ a female pilot and by 1987 was the first airline worldwide to introduce a no-smoking policy on all of its aircraft. Today, the airline's itinerary includes more than 300 destinations and its fleet has expanded to include more than 170 aircraft.
