Asiana Airlines is one of the two main airlines in South Korea and is headquarted in Seoul. The airline was established in 1988 and was initially using Boeing 737 Classic planes that flew to Gwangju and Busan. In 1989, Asiana began services to Jeju City and Daegu, and the airline later added charter flights to Sendai in Japan to its roster. In 1990, Asiana began scheduled international flights to Tokyo, Nagoya, Sendai and Fukuoka with its fleet of 9 Boeing 747-400s, 10 Boeing 767-300s and 8 Boeing 737-400s. Services to Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Taipei were added soon after as well as transatlantic flights to Los Angeles. By the mid-1990s, the airline has services to Honolulu, Brussels and Vienna, and in 2003, the airline became a fully-fledged member of the Star Alliance and expanded routes into mainland China.
Asiana Airlines has predominantly focussed on long-haul services and on modernising its fleet. The airline has a reputation for being environmentally friendly; it was recognised for being the 'first environmentally friendly company within the service industry' in 2001 by the Ministry of Environment, with environmentally focussed measures including emission measurement and reduction, the reduction of pollution from ground facilities and serving Rainforest Alliance coffee on board. At present, the airline flies to 71 cities in 23 countries on 91 routes and has domestic services to 12 cities on 14 routes.
The airline offers a range of classes ranging from the best value Economy Class through to luxurious First Suite Class. Economy Class provides excellent value for money with a convenient and pleasant flight, while Economy Smartium offers the same facilities as Economy with 4 inches of extra legroom and easy access to boarding and special in-flight services. Business Class offers passengers spacious bed-style seats and seat partitions for private space as well as seat control systems for ideal comfort. Business Class Smartium has a staged seat layout that provides direct aisle access and 180-degree reclining bed-style seats. First Class seats recline 180 degrees and have a luxuriously wide space for passengers to enjoy a premium in-flight experience as well as privacy partitions. First Suite Class guarantees the best flying experience with two sliding doors for in-flight privacy, a fully flat bed that extends 210cm in length and a 32 inch HD personal monitor.
