Cheap flights with Eurowings

More than just another Low-Cost Carrier

Eurowings was formed by the merger of two smaller regional airlines, the Nürnberger Flugdients and Reise- und Industrieflug, in 1993. The airline grew steadily, adding new aircraft to its fleet, but it was Lufthansa's investment in the airline that has seen it grow, becoming one of the most popular low-cost airlines in Europe. Lufthansa began with a 24,9% stake in the company in 2001, which had already increased to 49% by 2004. By 2001, Lufthansa had assumed complete ownership of the airline and it became part of Lufthansa regional. In 2015, the carrier was repositioned, becoming Lufthansa's low-cost carrier for short- and long-haul flights. The airline is headquartered in Düsseldorf, but also maintains bases at 3 other German Airports, as well as the Vienna International Airport.

The addition of affordable long-haul flights since 2015 has set Eurowings apart from other low-cost carriers in Europe. Today the airline flies from 7 locations in Germany to over 130 destinations in Europe. Current long-haul destinations include Cuba, The Dominican Republic, Thailand, Dubai, USA, Mauritius and South Africa. In the future, the airline plans to expand both their European and International offering. With a continued focus on providing customers with an innovative, high-quality product at an attractive price, Eurowings is expected to become one of the leading providers of low-cost, point-to-point flights in Europe.

Customers on both long- and short-haul flights can choose between three fare types; BEST, SMART and BASIC. As the name suggests, the Best Fare includes the best of everything a flight has to offer, including premium seating in the front section of the cabin with more leg room, priority check-in and boarding, inflight entertainment on personal screens, a reserved hand-luggage compartment, A la carte catering (Wings Bistro Menu) and an increased luggage allowance. The Smart fare includes all the basics that passengers may expect, including a reserved standard seat, a meal and a standard luggage allowance. Finally, the basic fare was designed for travellers who are not interested in all the frills. This ticket price includes the flight, one piece of hand luggage and a complimentary bottle of water. In addition, the Smart and Basic fares can each be tailored, so customers can decide exactly which services they would like to add to their ticket for an extra fee and which ones they can do without.

Practical Information

Luggage allowance varies depending on the fare booked:

  • Basic Fare - only 1 item of hand luggage. Checked luggage can be booked for an additional fee
  • Smart Fare - 1 items of hand luggage and 1 item of checked luggage up to 23kg.
  • Best Fare - 2 items of hand luggage and 2 items of checked luggage up to 23kg each.

Check in times can vary depending on the airport you are flying from, but the airline recommends allowing enough time for check-in and security checks. A good rule of thumb is to schedule an extra half hour between check-in and boarding to avoid unnecessary pressure. A limited number of long-haul flights and all short-haul flights offer online check-in as early as 72 hours before scheduled departure. Once again, the departure airport may affect your online check-in, so it is best to double-check all relevant check-in times and information with the airline directly.
