Flying from London City Airport (LCY)
Situated in London's Docklands, London City Airport began life in the 1980s, when businesses in the City decided that Heathrow and Gatwick were not convenient enough. They needed a runway within a few minutes of their offices and, when LCY opened in 1988, they got it. At first, the runway was only long enough to cope with very small passenger planes, limiting the airport's connections to domestic and very short-haul European flights. However, following runway expansions in the 1990s, the number of routes started to climb.
By the 2000s, City developed to the extent that it could commence its first transatlantic services to New York, using Airbus A318s that had been adapted for a shorter runway. During the skiing season, City also links London with slopes in Switzerland, France and Austria, while in the summer, flights depart for Mediterranean resorts like Majorca and Ibiza. It may never rank with Heathrow or Gatwick as one of the UK's major airports, but London City is a vital part of the capital's aviation scene, and flights from the airport are a handy route to some exceptional destinations.
