7 Remote Work Visas Around the World
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, working from home has slowly become the norm across the world. As such, many professionals are reconsidering their living arrangements and opting to move to more idyllic destinations. So, if you’ve ever dreamt of living on a tropical island or a historical European city, now is your chance. Several countries around the world have launched remote work visas for foreigners in efforts to stimulate their economies. Take a look below at some of the countries and their long-term visa schemes to see which interests you.
Barbados
Barbados has implemented a similar 12-month Welcome Stamp for internationals who wish to relocate to the Caribbean country. Those who are interested can apply online and expect to hear back within 5 working days. The minimum annual salary requirement is US$50,000. Approved professionals will have to pay US$2000 for an individual visa, and US$3000 for a family bundle. Although the application fee is higher than in most countries, note that you will not have to pay income tax in Barbados.
Bermuda
The Bermuda government is now offering 12-month residency visas for teleworkers and students who are interested in living on the island. Applicants must be over 18, provide proof of employment and/or enrollment, and health insurance. The visa, targeted at travel nomads and entrepreneurs, costs US$263 and is one of the few long term-visas in the world that is also open to students. Cayman Islands
The Cayman Islands recently introduced a new program called the Global Citizen Concierge, which allows foreigners to live in the islands for up to two years. To be eligible for the program, applicants must provide proof of employment, with an annual wage of at least US$100,000 for individuals, US$150,000 for two-person households and US$180,000 for households with dependent child(ren). Applicants must also have health insurance coverage for all members of the household. The fee of the Global Citizen Concierge Certificate is US$1,469 per annum for two-person households and an additional US$500 per dependent child.
Estonia
As of August 1, 2020, teleworkers can apply for Estonia’s Digital Nomad Visa, after which they can stay in the country for one year. The monthly earnings requirement to apply for the visa is €3,504. The application fee is €80 for a short stay visa and €100 for a long stay visa. Applicants will hear back within 30 days.
Georgia
Georgia has also launched a similar program, named Remotely From Georgia for professionals who have a minimum monthly salary of US$2,000. Other qualifications include:
- proof of health insurance;
- a valid passport that covers the duration of your stay;
- and a 12-day quarantine at one of Georgia’s pre-approved hotels at your own expense.
A major benefit to this program is that it allows travellers from more countries to enter Georgia. At present, Georgia is only open to 5 nations for tourism (Germany, France, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia), but the Digital Nomad Visa is open to travellers from 95 countries.
Mauritius
The Indian Ocean island nation of Mauritius has just launched a Premium Visa which offers a renewable 12-month residency for people wishing to relocate for work, leisure or retirement, including digital nomads. Applicants must have proof of his/her long stay plans and sufficient travel and health insurance for the initial period of stay. The visa is free and you can get more information and apply here.
United Arab Emirates
The United Arab Emirates is the latest country to offer visas for professionals whose companies are based overseas. The new scheme provides benefits to remote workers that was previously only afforded to residents. To be eligible for the visa, overseas professionals must earn a monthly income of at least US$5000, have a working contract that is valid for a year, and provide three months of bank statements. The visa costs $287, plus medical insurance and processing fees. Those who obtain the visa will be able to open a bank account, enrol their children in schools, and set up utilities.
