What breakfast looks like around the world
Whoever thinks that a toast along with eggs or cereals are eaten for breakfast in every country in the world is wrong. But what does breakfast consist of in the rest of the world? We did some research and found out that breakfast meals differ enormously in various parts of the world.
1. Tortillas with fillings (Mexico)
When you think of Mexican food, you probably already think of tacos or tortillas and that's not surprising, given that these are the most famous culinary specialties in the country. But have you ever considered that for many families in Mexico the breakfast often consists of 1 or 2 tortillas filled with black beans, egg and salsa sauce?
2. Dosa (India)
In India they often have breakfast with dosa. Because the batter is made from rice and split black lentils mixed with water, the dosa is an incredibly healthy and nutrient-rich product. Often sambar and chutney sauce is served as a side dish to give the dosa some more flavor.
3. Arepa (Colombia)
The Colombia consists of an arepa, a bun baked from boiled cornmeal dough. The arepa is usually topped with butter, egg, minced meat, jam or hogoa. Hogoa is a traditional herb sauce consisting of tomato, garlic and onions and is mainly eaten in South America.
4. Vegemite (Australia)
In Australia, many people start their day with toasted bread topped with Vegemite, a typical Australian paste that you often either like or don't like at all. Vegemite is made from yeast extract that is released during the brewing of beer and various herbs. The taste of Vegemite is hard to describe, but comes closest to being salty and slightly bitter.
5. Washoku (Japan)
In Japan, a washoku or traditional Japanese-style breakfast will have a bowl of steamed white rice, miso soup, broiled fish, a vegetable side dish, natto (fermented beans), and some pickled vegetables. Also the western-style (non-traditional) style of toast, eggs, and a bowl of salad is also quite popular.
6. Bowl of gallo pinto (Costa Rica)
Breakfast in Costa Rica often consists of a large bowl of gallo pinto. Gallo pinto is the national specialty and consists mostly of rice with black beans.
7. English-style breakfast (England)
The English breakfast is perhaps the most famous breakfast in the world. In England, the day is often started with a hearty breakfast consisting of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, tomatoes and white beans in tomato sauce.
8. Msemen (Morocco)
In Morocco, msemen is often eaten for breakfast. Msemen is a national specialty in Morocco and can be compared to a type of pancake. The msemen is often eaten in combination with jam or honey.
9. American pancakes, waffles, and more (USA)
In the United States, a person may sit down for a full hearty meal consisting of American pancakes/waffles with maple syrup, some type of cooked egg (sunny-side up, scrambled, egg benedict), hash brown, sausage/bacon, and toast.
10. Fresh vegetables, fruits, cheese, bread (Turkey)
The breakfast in Turkey is very varied and consists of many fresh products such as vegetables, fruit, feta, simit, airy Turkish bread, not to mention a glass of Turkish tea. Because the Turkish breakfast is so varied and fresh, the Turkish breakfast is perhaps one of the healthiest breakfasts in the world!
11. A bowl of congee (Thailand)
A traditional style of breakfast in Thailand may consist of a bowl of congee (or rice soup/porridge) with fried chinese donut. Other choices may include a bowl of warm soy milk with condiments like tapioca, mung bean or grains; sticky rice with bbq pork skewer; a glass of Thai style coffee/tea.
12. Brötchen (Germany)
In Germany, Germans love a big, long breakfast on the weekend. They have all sorts of brötchen (or 'little bread' rolls) that they get fresh from the bakery!
13. Bowl of noodles, dim sum, Chinese doughnut (China)
Depending on where you are in China, breakfast may slightly differ, but a typical type of breakfast may be a nice warm bowl of noodles (made from either rice or wheat), dim sum (like a steamed bun) or a piece of Chinese doughnut with soy milk to start your day.
14. Shakshuka (Israel)
A traditional breakfast in Israel can be either regular/vegetarian/vegan as they have a high percentage of vegetarians/vegans. It usually consists of an omelette/different forms of egg dish, bread or buns, fine chopped salad, olives, tahini, cheese and all sorts of small condiments such as roasted peppers, pesto, fruit jams. Shakshuka is also a very popular.
15. Champorado, Taho, and more (Philippines)
An extremely common breakfast is Champorado, or chocolate rice pudding. And of course, rice for breakfast is also a staple, with cooked egg (sunny-side up), and some kind of meat dish, such as tocino (sweet pork strips), longganisa, corned beef, etc.
