Travellers and sun seekers have been visiting this part of Portugal for decades and for city breaks Faro is one of the most popular spots in southern Europe. The long hours of sunshine, the glorious beaches and the relaxed atmosphere all contribute to a great holiday. So why not give it a go and indulge in a city trip Faro style?
Faro has a few historic buildings though not extensive as many of its older buildings were destroyed in the Great Earthquake in 1755. However, there are some to enjoy on your city trip in Faro with the Igreja do Carmo being the most eye-catching. The Igreja do Carmo is a Baroque style building with two towers.
For one of the macabre city breaks, Faro has a Chapel of Bones attached to this church which is set out at the back within an overgrown garden. Some of the walls are decorated with human bones taken from the monks’ cemetery next door! For a more relaxed city trip wander around the attractive Igreja de Sao Pedro which has a beautifully decorated altar.
Faro has many beaches to explore and rocky outlets to climb if you have children with you. Museums for children under the age of 12 pay half the price while yougner children enter for free.
Faro puts on a great show for the Carnaval in February, leading up to Lent. It is a time for street processions, colourful costumes and much merriment.
Faro is well stocked with nightclubs, bars, cafes and restaurants to keep you up all hours. Most of the nightclubs do not get started until at least 11pm, and after midnight crowds often spill out into the street to continue partying!
As for restaurants, many specialise in seafood with a popular dish being arooz de mariscos, a stew of rice and shellfish. As for wine, with Portugal’s international reputation for rose wine, you will be have plenty of choice with good quality wine everywhere. Stick to local produced beer if possible as imported versions are much more expensive.
Faro really has it all with the advantages of a city and the approachability of a smaller town. Take the advantage today and book your flights through BudgetAir.
