Things to do in Perth

The compact city centre area of Perth with its parks and green spaces is a true joy to explore on foot, or if you're feeling more energetic, by bicycle. These can be easily hired from different points across the city, while renting a car gets you out to explore beautiful scenery further afield. Take in family-friendly attractions like:

  • The zoo
The zoo, home to over a 1,000 animals of 150 different species. Locals are particularly fond of its elephant herd while children always enjoy close encounters with its free-roaming kangaroos.
  • Adventure World
Adventure World is the city's only theme park with plenty of thrills for all ages with roller coasters, water rides and go-karting. The park is open from September through to June, the typical summer and autumn seasons in Western Australia.

Culture Attractions:

Learn about the city's past with a visit to Fremantle Prison and the Maritime Museum. Although the city doesn't have much in the way of historical attractions, a visit to a long-established winery, such a Mann Wines or the Upper Reach Winery is a must. You will also find several microbreweries dotted around the countryside which locals and tourists alike enjoy visiting. Little Creatures and the smaller Monk Brewery and Kitchen are particularly worth visiting.

A great way to spend a Friday, Saturday or Sunday morning is to take a leisurely stroll around the delightful Fremantle Market where over 150 stalls sell everything from local gourmet produce to handmade fashions and jewellery. And, of course, the city doesn't fail to deliver with its shops, restaurants and nightlife. Dip into quirky local boutiques or treat yourself to a spot of high-end fashion shopping from the city's branches of Burberry, Gucci and Louis Vuitton.

The beaches

With the region's glorious climate you'll want to spend some time on the beach and a stay here puts you close to some of Australia's best. Don't forget to swim between the flags and pack plenty of insect repellent and sunscreen. Scarborough Beach is nearest but most of the locals head to Cottesloe. This patrolled beach has grassed areas for picnics as well as long sandy stretches and inviting warm water.

Parks

The locals also like to get outside into the parks. Join them at their favorites:

  • Bold Park, Kings Park and Lake Monger are inner-city green spaces.
  • The Whiteman Park conservation and recreation centre
The Whiteman Park conservation and recreation centre is a little further out and a great place for hiking or bicycle adventures. Youngsters can explore the Children's Forest and try their hand at some archery. Transport buffs can enjoy heritage tram rides and the Tractor Museum of Western Australia.
  • Rottnest Island
Make a day of it and take a drive and ferry to Rottnest Island, a nature reserve off the coast. Once you arrive hire a bike and explore the exciting wildlife, looking out for the famous quokka, as well as dolphins and fur seals. If you can't resist the appeal of penguins, find time for a visit to Penguin Island with its colonies of fairy penguins.

The nightlife

Part of holiday fun is sampling the nightlife. Perth is well-known for its Indie music scene which can be enjoyed in different club venues and as part of an exciting annual calendar of events. Club nights with regular performances by both local and international DJs and bands can be found in the Northbridge, Subiaco and Leederville areas of the city. Most clubs open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays but never on Sundays because of local licensing laws. You will be asked for photo ID on entry.
