Things to do in Cairo

Giza should be every visitor's first priority. However, Al-Azhar is almost as important. The city's main mosque was completed in 972 AD, and it's visually stunning. Guests can marvel at the intricately carved Gate of the Barbers and the cavernous main prayer hall.

There are plenty of museums and historical sights dotted around the city as well. For instance, the Coptic Museum is not to be missed. Dealing with Egypt's ancient Christian community, it features an incredible art collection. Many of the mosques are also works of art in themselves, with the mosque of Ibn Tulun and the mosaics of the Madrassa of Qalaunbeing some of the most extraordinary examples of Islamic architecture.

Shopping in Cairo

If history and museums aren't your passion, or you're satisfied that you've seen all the sights, there's a wealth of other things to do in the capital of Egypt. Shopping is a great example. The city has a few mega-malls packed with designer stores, but more importantly, it also has the bazaar of Khan al-Khalili. Crammed with store holders selling ornaments, clothes, souvenirs and carpets, this is the place to haggle for a bargain in true Cairene fashion.

Experience the nightlife

Nightlife is another major attraction. There are famous cafes like el Fishawy which is packed with conversation and debate all night long. There's classy music and fine wine at Sequioa and dancing until dawn at After Eight, a centre of the city's youth culture.

Food & Drink

Egyptians love to eat out, and the mezze at Abou el Sid or the Lebanese food at Al Dabke are as good as anything you'll taste in New York or London. Street food is of a high quality and enticing smells seem to follow you wherever you go. Don't miss out on the falafels at Zooba, the curries at Koshary Abou Tarek or the chicken-filled shawarmaat Abou Ammar El Soury. There's no better way to refuel in between historical sights. In the evenings, you can even kick back with a cocktail or beer at bars like Amici in Heliopolis.
