Events in Birmingham

There always seems to be something going on in this vibrant destination. Much of that is due to the presence of the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), which constantly hosts international industry, retail and sports events. But there are events to enjoy all over the city. Here are four of the most attractive entries on the city's calendar for visitors to experience:

The BBC Good Food Show (November)

If you have any interest in gastronomy, the BBC Good Food Show will be a real treat. Hosted by the NEC the event takes place every year in late November, making it a great opportunity to prepare for the festive season. Get recipe ideas from leading TV chefs like Jamie Oliver, sample wines, oils, sauces, meats and ales, and find out what's hot in the culinary world.

Autosport International (January)

Another in the long list of major events held at the NEC, Autosport International is the UK's biggest motorsports show. If you love Formula 1, Superbikes, rallying or karting, this is the event for you. Generally held in mid-January, the show gives fans the chance to meet high-profile drivers, take the wheel in simulators and see vintage cars. It's heaven for motorsports lovers.

Swingamajig (April)

Music and dance fans will want to be in town on 30th April, when the centre of the city is taken over by swing music fans. Around 3,000 people gather to dance, eat street food and enjoy live music from 70 swing bands. Dressing in 1920s style is encouraged, but not essential, while a great time is guaranteed if you are ready to get into the swing of things.

The Flatpack Film Festival

Another offbeat local favourite, the Flatpack Film Festival aims to bring improvised film screenings to unusual locations. With an emphasis on music and youth culture, the festival involves some of the city's liveliest bars and cafes including the Jekyll and Hyde, Bodega and Rose Villa Tavern - all of which mix film screenings with high-quality pub food.
