The beautiful city of Cochin in south-western India is an inspired holiday choice as it is well known for its magnificent beaches, delicious cuisine and elegant colonial architecture. Cochin has been a thriving port since 1341. Kochi, as the city is also known, was an integral link on the spice route, and traders from China, Europe and the Arabian Gulf were quick to snap up local products like black pepper and cardamom. Their influences can be seen in the city's diverse range of churches, mosques and temples, as well as in its architecture.
Local landmarks like Fort Kochi, St. Francis Church and the famous Chinese fishing nets in the harbour, all add to the appeal of one of India's top destinations. Explorers have been coming to this picturesque Malabar Coast city for over 600 years. The Dutch colonised Cochin before handing it over to the British and Portuguese explorer, Vasco da Gama arrived in the region in the 14th century. The famous navigator was buried in St. Francis Church which dates from 1503 and is one of the city's oldest buildings. Although his remains have now been transferred to Lisbon, you can still see his tombstone.
Explore Bolgatty Island where the British built a Royal Residency and where you can see Bolgatty Palace, one of the oldest Dutch-built edifices outside of the Netherlands. Bolgatty now boasts an impressive golf course and marina and you can even explore it on horseback. Tourist hotspot Vypin Island, is home to one of the region's most famous stretches of sand, Cherai beach, and it's the ideal place to swim, sunbathe or try some of the water sports on offer.
