Things to do in Goa

From picturesque beaches to medieval forts, Goa has something for everybody. The short distances make it easy to travel from one beach to another, thereby allowing you to enjoy everything you're interested in.

Goa for nature lovers

Sunbathing is one of the first things to do here. Most beach shacks set out sun lounges and umbrellas where you can relax with your book. Food and beer is served right on the beach, so you can plan to spend the entire day there. There are vendors who stroll up and down the stretch, selling coconuts and tropical fruits or offering services like hair-braiding and head massages.

Dolphin watching is another popular activity that tourists can enjoy, especially in the southern part of the state. There are boat tours that set off at dawn, and take you a little way away from the coastline. Soon enough, you'll see schools of dolphins and porpoises, jumping out of the calm sea in graceful curves. Silhouetted again the golden morning sunlight, they make for a majestic sight indeed.

Cultural attractions

There are several breathtaking churches in the state that deserve a visit. Built over 400 years ago, the Basilica of Bom Jesus is one of the oldest and most religiously significant churches here, as it houses the tomb of St. Francis Xavier. Its sweeping baroque architecture and marble mosaic floors make it a stunning place to visit. The Se Cathedral is not to be missed either. It is one of the largest churches in Asia, and it is said that its massive bell can be heard across the entire state.

History enthusiasts should not miss out on visiting the Aguada Fort. This Portuguese fort was built in 1612, and the name Aguada, which translates to "water", refers to the freshwater spring that flows within. In its day, this fort used to provide water to the ships passing by. Today, its rocky walls set against the vast horizon of the Arabian Sea, make it a picturesque spot for tourists - and this fort has starred in many Indian movies too.
The lively weekly markets of Goa should be on top of your list. The Wednesday flea market at Anjuna is extremely popular, and one can find everything from clothes and jewellery to carpets (and even the occasional antique) at affordable prices. If bargain-hunting in the heat does not sound appealing, head to Arpora's Saturday Night Bazaar which starts after sunset and goes on till midnight. Remember to put your negotiating skills to use, and you will be surprised at the deals you manage to get at these markets.
