Things to Do in Surabaya

The port city of Surabaya on the Indonesian island Java, also commonly referred to as Kota Pahlawan, has become a tourist hotspot over the last few years.

For the Shopaholics

Shopaholics need not look any further than the Tunjungan Plaza. It is the biggest shopping centre for miles and has more than just an array of interesting shops and satisfying eateries. The plaza also hosts a number of unique expos and events, including the Cosmetic Fair and Furniture Expo.
Spending money is very easy when you spend a day or two here. Some of the shops that you can explore include 3Second, Accent, Aldo, Bonchou and Crown Jewellery to name but a few. Along with this, you will also be able to savour a host of delicious tastes from around the world. The restaurants and take-away joints in the Tunjungan Plaza include American Grill, Bakmi Gili, Bee Cheng Hiang, Breadlife and Roti Boy. Why not take your taste buds on a journey all of their own?

Must-See Sights

The Bratang Flower Market was originally a quaint, little farm. However, over the years it has grown into something a lot bigger than that. Now it is filled with thousands of beautiful flowers and 200 different stalls. In short, it is every tourist's dream, especially if you're searching for a bit of welcome escapism. The best part is that it is open all day, every day, and it is very easy to get to as it is nearby the Bratang terminal.

If you're looking for somewhere to spend the better part of the day, the Sampoerna Museum should definitely form part of your itinerary. As already mentioned, not only is the museum an interesting find, but you can also take advantage of the art gallery (which exhibits work from Indonesia's most revered artists), the shop (which sells a broad selection of souvenirs) and the café (which specialises in the creation of both Asian and Western favourites).

Lastly, you cannot visit Surabaya without making a stop at the Masjid Nasional Al Akbar. This gargantuan mosque is an architectural masterpiece. Not only is it pleasing on the eyes, but it is also the place to be if the goal is to soak up the local culture. Meet the locals, learn about their lifestyles and really make the most of your trip.

Nightlife

Whether you're in the mood for a quiet dinner and a few drinks, or whether you're really in search of a party to remember, you'll find it all right in the heart of Surabaya. Some of the most popular venues include:

  • Top 10 Coyote Bar and Karaoke: Things can get pretty wild here once the sun sets. From raucous karaoke to pretty girls in bikinis, there really isn't a better place to let your hair down and party with the locals.
  • Foreplay: At Foreplay, drinks prices are a lot more affordable, hence the reason why its main patrons are students. They also offer themed evenings and ladies' nights on Wednesdays.
  • Veneno Nightclub: This club is slightly smaller, making it the perfect choice for those who want to enjoy some good music without having to endure the same level of noise associated with the larger clubs in the area.
