Flights to Fukuoka

Fukuoka is a fascinating place with a rich cultural history. While embracing the past, this is very much a modern vibrant city, the sixth largest in Japan and a favoured area for new business start-ups and technological innovation. This was the place where the Samurai battled against Kublai Khan's 13th century Mongol invasion army which was finally defeated by being struck by a severe typhoon, known as Kamikaze, just 15 km to the south. The city was formed by the merging of two towns in 1889 with the other town, Hakata, now being a central area of the city. Both names are still commonly used and the main railway station is Hakata station.

Things to do in Fukuoka

The sunny southern Japanese islands have always been popular holiday destinations and the city welcomes many visitors both from other parts of Japan and overseas. Those interested in history will find a range of museums and a visit to the ruined walls of the 17th century castle provides a superb viewpoint over the city, bay and adjoining parks. For the dedicated shopaholic, there can be few places that compare to the incredible Canal City which is a complete shoppers' paradise, the whole area being built around an artificial canal complete with illuminated fountains.

Sports fans may wish to visit the Fukuoka Yahuoku! Dome, home of the Softbank Hawks baseball team or enjoy the more traditional Sumo contests held in the city. Food is also a major attraction with local specialities including Hakata ramen (noodles). These and many other dishes can be enjoyed at outdoor Yatai (food stalls) especially on Nakasu Island. For those with no fear of heights, the culinary experience can literally be taken to new heights by visiting one of the cafes or restaurants on the Fukuoka Tower. Budgetair.co.uk currently has some incredible deals on offer and this is one destination that should be on everyone's 'to visit' list.
