This famous annual event takes place in the first half of July and culminates with a float race along a city centre route with seven teams from each of the city's districts competing. The decorated floats are without wheels and have to be physically dragged along.
The arrival of the Sumo tournament attracts many visitors both to watch the contests and also to meet many of the stars at various 'jungo beya' (places where wrestlers sleep and practice) throughout the city.
August 1st sees a huge display of fireworks from an island on a lake in Ohori Park. The display is spectacular in the park but can be seen from many parts of the city.
