In Vientiane there is a such a wide range of activities to enthrall, captivate and titillate visitors from all corners of the globe.
If you're looking to spend some money while in town, the Riverside Night Market is the place to be. The market is right next to the stunning Mekong river and merchants can be seen setting up their stalls right before sunset. Browse through a variety of different products including Buddhist-inspired knick-knacks, clothing and affordable accessories.
Markets are incredibly commonplace in Vientiane and are the places at which you are sure to find the best possible prices. The Talat Sao Morning Market is another popular favourite amongst locals and tourists alike. Wooden carvings, murals and cheap skirts, pants and dresses can be found in abundance - and you can even take advantage of the cinema located within the indoor section of the market for a bit of entertainment in between browsing the shops.
The COPE Visitor Centre, as discussed, is a must-see. While there isn't always a happy ending per say, it is a facility that is committed to helping people in Lao who have been affected by leftover explosive devices from the Vietnam War. It certainly provides tourists with a look into the city's history and how hard people have worked to create hope for those who have been worst affected. Not only will you learn more about the cluster bombs that were dropped and the devastation that they caused, but you will also be able to hear personal stories from real people who have overcome their disabilities through plenty of dedication and the support provided to them by COPE. You can also donate to the cause and help those in need in your own special way.
The Wat Si Saket is a gorgeous temple and popular tourist attraction. Along with housing an interesting museum, it is also home to an infamous cloister wall filled with silver and ceramic images of Buddha - definitely a sight to behold.
The Great Sacred Stupa, also known as Pha That Luang, is one of the oldest stupas in the world. The surrounding grounds and temples are just as beautiful as the stupa itself and warrant plenty of exploring, so if you're planning on paying this attraction a visit, be sure to set aside some time to really make the most of it. Entrance fees are affordable - so value for money is a certainty.
Vientiane is full of hustle and bustle once the sun goes down, and is home to a variety of bars and restaurants. From beer houses to cocktail bars, you're sure to enjoy a memorable night out on the town.
