Langkawi is the perfect retreat to spend time around the pool of a swanky hotel and be pampered in a lavish spa. Many tourists are content to stay in their self-contained resorts with all amenities on hand. But the island has so much to offer it would be a shame to miss it. Here are some highlights:
Get the big picture of the island and its surroundings by taking the cable car to the top of Mount Mat Cincang. Access to the cable car is found in The Oriental Village in the upper northwest of the island. As the car begins its 700 metre rise up to the peak, you'll notice the temperature dropping. From the apex, you can enjoy spectacular views to southern Thailand on clear days.
Take a swim in the strangely named Tasik Dayang Bunting (Lake of the Pregnant Maiden). This freshwater lake is located on the archipelago's second largest island located some 20 kilometres south of Kuak town, the capital of Langkawi. Other than a dip in the lake, you can enjoy a fish spa. Immerse your feet in a tank and let tiny fish nibble away at the dead skin. Keep an eye out for cheeky monkeys swinging down from the trees.
Frisk on Pantai Cenang, the island's most popular beach. Sunbathe on the powdery sand or head out for banana-boat or jet-ski some action. Be sure to keep a wary out for jellyfish.
Go jungle trekking in the ancient rainforest that covers most of the island. Here you can view birds monkey and other frisky fauna. Langkawi is home to well over 200 species of bird and over 500 types of butterfly. You can also paddle through the mangrove forest to view species such as kingfishers, plovers, herons, and fiddler crabs.
Visit Crocodile Adventureland where over 1000 crocs and gators are on display. Witness a boxing match between man and crocodile and ride in a croc-drawn rickshaw.
Tuck into the local fare at one of the beach-side eateries. Choose from Malay, Chinese, Indian or international food while watching the sun set over the Andaman Sea. Be sure to enjoy local Malay delicacies made with fresh seafood cooked in local herbs and spices. Buffets are a grand experience and the best way to sample everything. Simply load your plate with rice and ladle on whatever you fancy from the 20+ dishes on display.
