Belgrade was one of the most important cities in the former Yugoslavia, and the same is true now that it is the capital of Serbia. The city lies on the southern edge of the Pannonian Plain, between the Sava and Danube rivers. There is much to experience in terms of art and culture, and the surroundings are beautiful. The Blue Train is a fun way to explore Belgrade's surroundings. Belgrade is best known for its vibrant nightlife. There are floating clubs (called Splavovi) where people party all night. It's friendly, safe and the drinks are cheap.

Here you will find everything you need for shopping in surprising and cosy little shops. In the evening, the Old Town is the place to go out, where you will meet many Belgraders as well as foreign tourists. So lots of fun!
The White Palace and the Royal Palace
Serbia is a republic. However, there is still a royal family, although they play no role in politics. The last Crown Prince still lives in the imposing Royal Palace, which you can visit by prior arrangement. Close to the Royal Palace is the famous White Palace. This particularly beautifully designed palace was once the official residence of Marshal Tito, the man who forged Serbia into unity with the other Yugoslav countries.
Walk around Belgrade Fortress
Want to see where the Sava and Danube rivers cross? There's no better place to see it than from the imposing Belgrade Fortress. As well as the fortress, you'll find the remains of churches and towers. There are also theatres and restaurants in the complex. Did you know that the remains of a Roman fort dating back at least 2,000 years have been found on the site of the Belgrade Fortress? Looking out over the rivers from the city walls, you can sense that this was a strategically well-chosen location.
Visit the Tomb of Marshal Tito
Marshal Josip Tito led the resistance against Nazi rule as a captain of the Yugoslav Communist Partisans. After the Second World War, he reunited Yugoslavia and ruled with a firm hand for decades. Tito is still revered by many Serbs and his name is spoken with reverence. Visit the grave of this important statesman and show your respect for Yugoslavia's struggles and history.
Picnic in Ada Ciganlija or Topcider Park
From spring to late autumn, the weather in Belgrade can be very pleasant. So why have lunch indoors? Do as the locals do and take your lunch to Topcider Park, with its beautiful nineteenth-century gardens. You can also head to Ada Ciganlija. This is a peninsula in the Sava River. Here you can rent a boat after dinner and enjoy bobbing on the water.
