Hat Sawan beach can be found on the Ubolratana Dam. The huge reservoir is right at the heart of a number of water related activities including fishing and swimming. There are also a number of good hiking trails around the dam. If you're more keen on learning about those aforementioned dinosaurs, the protected Phu Wiang National Park is the place to see some fossils. Species have been discovered here that have not been found anywhere else on earth. As alternative, head to Dino Water Park for a fun, but nevertheless dinosaur-themed day out - a great attraction for families with children of any age. The waterpark includes a relaxing lazy river, beach and wave pool. It's a fun way to cool off during the day.
Hong Mun Mang or Khon Kaen City Museum is situated on the banks of the Kaen Nakhon Lake. The museum, which is also a research and study centre, was established for the locals to exhibit how proud they feel about their community and to link each of the communities in the province. No visit to this museum would be complete without taking a moment to appreciate the historical records of Khon Kaen. Having learnt something about the history, dive deeper into Thai culture at the silk centre, Sala Mai Thai, located in Khon Kaen Vocational College. Visitors can try their hand on a loom or simply watch demonstrations on various parts of the silk production process, such as dyeing and weaving.
The Laeng Market in the Mueang District, near the Nong Khot Lake, is a night market that starts at 4.30 pm. For 2 kilometers, you will find numerous stalls selling local savory dishes and desserts, and a range of clothes. Ton Tann Green Market is another night time market in an attractive open space with a relaxed atmosphere. There are many handmade crafts on sale, but it also serves as a meeting place for people who share the same interests, be it a drama club, a dance club, or a photography group.
This is a great destination to sample some delicious cuisines. Vietnamese and Isaan meals are the most popular choice, but there are a number of hotels and coffee shops selling western style food too. The Bua Luang Restaurant that overlooks the Kaen Nakhon Lake, comes highly recommended with a beautiful sunset view and a range of Thai, Chinese-Thai and Isaan dishes. The Motet Cafe on Chata Phadung Road is owned by Mot, who speaks English and is always happy to offer advice on the area.
