The capital of Vietnam is renowned for its beautiful centuries-old architecture and diverse culture that stems from French, Chinese and Southeast Asian influences. With a population of four million, this is a great destination to visit to immerse yourself in the culture of Vietnam and learn more about its traditions and heritage. With a high density of buildings in close proximity to each other, there are many opportunities to explore the city by foot. Vietnam's capital is situated on the banks of the Red River, around 100 kilometres from the river's mouth. The river is a vital part of life here, with human settlements dating back as far as the 3rd century BC.
Hanoi was renamed from Thang Long in 1831 when Hue was the capital of Vietnam. The fusion of Asian and French culture gives the city a unique charm that creates a one-of-a-kind feel and atmosphere. The pulsating heart is the bustling Old Quarter region, with streets lined by market stalls. There's plenty to see and do in Hanoi, including The Imperial City of Thang Long, an architectural relic of Vietnam's rich history and culture, which has now been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The splendid cultural diversity and excellent attractions make Hanoi an ideal destination for people of all walks of life.
A dramatically-shaped temple with a fascinating history, the Perfume Pagoda was constructed in the 15th century and features a series of Buddhist temples which were built in a twisting, maze-like system within a mountain range. Here, you'll find incredible sights such as alleyways carved into the rock, verdant forests and twisting streams.

Each September, Hanoi celebrates the Declaration of Independence of the Democatic Republic of Vietnam in 1945 and commemorates the death of Ho Chi Minh. The city marks the two important anniversaries with celebrations that include firework displays in Ba Dinh Square right in front of Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. Due to the deep significance of these dates in Vietnamese history, the majority of citizens take to the streets for these events, many congregating at Hoan Kiem Lake.
