Vancouver is a seaport city in British Columbia, and the third largest city in Canada. Located roughly 50km north of the US border, it is a relatively young city, but the Coast Salish indigenous people lived there for around 6000 years. Named after Captain George Vancouver, who sailed from Western Australia to Alaska and entered the harbour in 1792, the area was a hub for logging and fur trading, exporting high quality timber around the world. The population of the city expanded rapidly with the arrival of the transcontinental railway in the late 1880s, and has grown every year since.
Being a port city, there are many nationalities living in the area, which is represented by the different types of cuisine in the restaurants and cafes. There is also a large food truck scene in the city. There are many museums and galleries to visit, as well as a thriving theatre scene.
Like any major city, there are plenty of tourist attractions, landmarks and things to do while visiting. There's plenty of fun for families and many outdoor activities for thrill-seekers. Vancouver is an area of outstanding natural beauty, with the North Shore Mountains dominating the city skyline and the rest of the city bordered by water. The impressive horizon and geography have made it a centre for film and television production, earning the nickname Hollywood North, and a tourist attraction for visitors pursuing outdoor activities. The North Shore Mountains are home to several skiing resorts and is a popular destination for mountain biking, hiking and rock climbing. The Pacific Ocean, beaches, lakes and rivers in the area are ideal for many watersports.
Sailing is very popular, as well as windsurfing, sea kayaking and skim-boarding. Sports fans will find Vancouver has many teams competing in a wide range of sports. Ice Hockey is one of Canada's national sports, and the city is represented by the Canucks. The BC Lions play in the Canadian Football League, the Vancouver Whitecaps FC play in Major League Soccer and the Vancouver Stealth are members of the National Lacrosse League.
